I. Dependency

The events of the September 11th many consequences, among one very interesting fact was revealed - sympathy for the Americans and dislike to the United States of America. This emotional splitting hardly can be attributed to one ethnic, racial or confessional group of the world population. I recall an interview on Russian TV with an Chinese policeman who was on duty at the American embassy in Bengin right after the attack.
"I am here - the policeman said - to carry out my duties and protect the US Embassy in a case of possible attack I am sorry about the victims killed in the World Trade Center, I sympathize those who lost their relatives and friends there But personal opinion, America deserved that What did America feel when they bomb Chinese Embassy in Belgrade?"
The same feelings and verbalized almost the same way are expressed by those who in general do not care who, how and where bombed any Chinese Embassy; it is easy to meet Russians (not nationalists!) who will recall how United States demolished Orthodox churches in Serbia And finally they will come to the same formula the Chinese policeman (who does not care about all Orthodox churches as well as Catholic ones in the world).
One my familiar journalist here, in Kirghizstan, right after American operations in Afghanistan found somewhere "Araphat-type" hat and wore it proudly and with challenge (this correlation of his purely Russian appearance with oriental type of outfit was really "challenging") in a token of a protest against US activity in Afghanistan. One could ask: why did not you protest the same away against Soviet operations in the same miserable country? No answer, for if he tried anything like that during the times of "democratic centralism" he would not be able to survive joyfully till the times of Western, American type of democracy.
I deliberately do not bring any examples from the world of Islam - it is easy to anticipate that feelings there are much more acute and contradictory.
I deliberately do not want to consider examples from the world of politics and interstate relations - for the big game is going on there, stakes are high, large sums are snatched, political and financial capitals are lost.
I am speaking about the sphere of immediate, daily communication; about so called daily routine where, finally, are formed and shaped all our feelings and emotional preferences. The world where all of us are just men-in-the-street.
It is quite difficult to understand an average person if you describe him in terms of good old logic. He (or she) has relatives and friends in the United States, there are his classmates and simply former compatriots who could be killed and who were actually killed that tragic September day. He himself, the average person, is eager to leave his own country and live in the States if law and money allow. He imitates America depending on own imagination, movies watched and amount of cash in pockets, he copies his way of life - buy a car or cars, build his house, give his kids education, learns American and not British English American business approach is a pattern for him - American methods of business management are objectives to be achieved. He even keeps his savings in American dollars!
And at the same time he says that America deserves it and should be punished
The list can be continued, but I believe I have said more than enough to give an opportunity for any attentive and reasonable participant of today's life able to see the things in a detached way (to gain Bakhtinian out-being) to say that we are dealing with a serious cultural and psychological conflict which determines people behaviour. In other words, we are dealing with the phenomenon described in psychoanalysis as dependency.
In terms of that Bin-Laden or whoever he was expressed quite common emotional conflict. Bin-Laden became a sort of personification of this conflict which had not been suppressed intrinsically any more. Bin-Laden revealed suppressed and hidden passions of majority of world population.
